A few weeks ago we were looking to do a crafty project for Memorial Day and discovered the black glue we had made for DIY Summer Camp a few years ago. It was my daughter’s great idea to use it to create this American Flag Black Glue Art.

How to Make Black Glue for Art Projects

Black glue is really easy to make. You basically just squirt black acrylic paint into a bottle of school glue and mix it together. This process works with clear or white glue. We have used both with the same results.

If you don’t want to mess with making the black glue, you can actually purchase it online. This would actually save you a step and might be easier if you don’t already have glue and paint on hand.

Creating American Flag Black Glue Art

Creating the American Flag for this Black Glue Art was very simple! She simply used the glue bottle to draw the rectangle in the upper left corner. Then she added the lines to create the stripes. Before you can paint, this glue needs to dry for several hours.

Once the glue was dry, she used watercolor paints to create this art project. We have a large set of watercolor paint but this can be done with a very basic watercolor paint set. The only colors needed are red and blue since we used white cardstock.

Once the watercolor paint was dry, she decided to use white acrylic paint on the blue for the star portion of this flag. The white watercolor paint wasn’t really showing up. You could also use glitter glue for this part.
