A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to chaperone my daughter’s field trip to Charleston. Our school had not done a field trip to this area before. This was an overnight field trip spent touring a battleship on Patriot’s Point and doing a walking tour in downtown Charleston on the first day. Then on the second day we had the Barrier Island Eco Tour out of the Isle of Palms Marina.
Isle of Palms is one of my favorite beaches so I was very excited for this part of the trip! First of all I was very impressed with the marina. It was in a beautiful location with a very nice shop and snack bar.

The Barrier Island Eco Tour is perfect for a school field trip near Charleston. Kids enjoyed going out on the boat and touring the island. Before getting on the boat, the naturalist did a great job educating the kids on different marine life.

While we were on the boat ride to the barrier island, we watched for dolphins and even checked a crab trap. We learned a lot about the ecosystem and how erosion happens.
Exploring the Barrier Island
Once we were on the island, we walked along the shore and he also educated us on the plants that live on a barrier island. There was an area on the called “boneyard beach” where the trees were dying due to erosion.

The kids were allowed to walk in the ocean and to also collect shells. We were just not allowed to bring anything they found back with us. All treasures had to be left on the island for others to enjoy.

On the boat ride back, they were able to pass around a hermit crab. We all really enjoyed the boat ride. The snack shop at the marina is called The Outpost. We were able to go inside there when we returned. The kids were excited to purchase slushies and I was excited to get an iced coffee!
I can’t wait to go back there and do one of their other tours with my family!
