If you enjoy messy play, this activity is for you! Valentine Oobleck is so fun and easy to make. It’s a great activity to do indoors when it’s cold or rainy outside.

It is also a great outdoor activity if you are lucky enough to have good weather right now. We first tried making oobleck a few years ago during our DIY Summer Camp. It was a big hit with the kids!

Valentine Oobleck Supplies

Oobleck is actually super simple to make. You only need two ingredients that are probably in your house right now. The ingredients are corn starch and water.

Valentine Oobleck Supplies

Turn your oobleck into a festive Valentine’s Day activity by adding a few more supplies!

  • Corn Starch
  • Water
  • Red Food Coloring
  • Heart Glitter (optional)
  • Heart Gems (optional)

The recipe for oobleck is 2 cups corn starch and 1 cup water. You just mix those two ingredients together. So easy! We mixed these in a round cake pan but any container will work.

Once the mixture starts coming together, add a few drops of red food coloring. If you want a brighter pink oobleck, you will need to add more food coloring. Our Valentine Oobleck turned out to be a pretty light pink color.

Valentine Oobleck for Sensory Science

Once you get the color the way you like it, add in the heart glitter and heart gems. This is completely optional. Playing with the oobleck without the added items is a fun activity. If you have really little ones, you may not want to include these items.

This is such a fun sensory science activity. You can actually read all about the science of oobleck on Scientific American.

The cool thing about ooblek is that the consistency changes as it moves. I picked it up and it was a solid. You can actually form a hard ball. As you pick it up though, then it starts oozing through your fingers.

It is super fun to play with! Don’t try to keep it for days though. This is best used for one day and disposed of in the trash.
