Last week was Space Week for our DIY Summer Camp {Camp Mom}. If I am being honest, it was not the most successful of our summer camp weeks. We had just gotten back from a beach trip. If you are a parent, you know beach trips with kids are lots of fun but not very relaxing and refreshing. I was tired. I’m still tired. So we kept it super simple and only did a few Space Week Activities.
We started the week off with an easy snack project….Edible Constellations! You only need pretzel sticks and mini marshmallows for this activity. You can show the kids pictures of constellations from books or online to help them get started. You can also just let them use their imaginations and build their own constellations. This was a big hit with both kids!
A couple of days later we had a Pinterest Fail with a bottle rocket experiment and I was tempted to throw in the towel. It was a real bummer because we had been looking forward to doing this one. The kids convinced me to keep moving forward though. I already had the ingredients to make Moon Sand so we did that next. We mixed black sand with corn starch and water to create a really cool texture. I couldn’t believe how realistic it turned out. We didn’t have any space figures so we improvised with our vast collection of Star Wars figures.
Our final project was Solar Oven S’mores! This one was a complete success besides fighting with the cling wrap to get it to fully cover the box. We love doing s’mores over a fire in the backyard but it’s been too hot lately to have a fire. This was the perfect alternative and the extremely hot day worked to our advantage. Check out the tutorial from Take Them Outside for step by step instructions.
Since I haven’t really given you a lot of space activities here, I also wanted share this previous post from our Moon Rock Experiment. A couple of months ago we made moon rocks from baking soda, water, glitter and food coloring. That was a fun project on its own. It really got fun when we added vinegar to the mix to create a Moon Rock Explosion. The mixture that remains was also really cool and had a soft texture. It was perfect for sensory play.
We may not have done a lot during Space Week but we enjoyed the activities that we did try. If you are looking for even more Space Themed Activities, be sure to check out All Free Kids Crafts. You’ll find more than 40 Science and Space Crafts for Kids!
I am also choosing to count this as Week 29 of the Pinterest Challenge since we successfully completed 3 different pins! Join us this week as we begin Olympics Week. Gavin seems to think this will be the best week yet! I hope he’s right! We’ve already picked up a great selection of books to share with you and have some fun activities planned.
