Our DIY Summer Camp {Camp Mom} continued on last week with some simple crafts and activities for Nature Week. We kept it even more simple than usual since my son caught a summer cold and wasn’t feeling up to par. We still had a lot of fun with the projects we chose to do.
Nature Week Crafts and Activities
Nature Week was at the top of our list this summer! We have a great backyard for it. When we created our Backyard Fairy Garden a few months ago, we had a blast being outside and digging in the dirt. If you need outdoor activities, visit the local dollar store for supplies and create your own fairy garden along with some of these other Nature Week Crafts and Activities.
Bugs and Reptiles Cloud Dough Tray
We started the week off by making a fresh batch of Cloud Dough. This stuff is so easy to make! You only need two ingredients – hair conditioner and cornstarch. The hair conditioner also makes it smell really good. I set up a tray with the cloud dough, plastic bugs and reptiles from the Dollar Tree, and some play dough tools and cutters we already had. They had fun making “fossils” of the bugs and burying the toys in the dough.
Dirt Cups Cooking Activity for Kids
Our next activity was at the top of the list when we were planning Nature Week. We made yummy Dirt Cups with homemade pudding, Trader Joe’s Joe Joe’s Sandwich Cookies, and gummy worms. We found the recipe from Mel’s Kitchen Cafe and I highly recommend it. We had fun making the pudding together and then assembling the cups and adding the worms.
Bird Feeders out of Recycled Materials
We also enjoyed making bird feeders out of cardboard tubes. We had made these last summer so we knew they would be a hit with the wildlife in our backyard. They are super simple to make and you can just slip them onto the branches.
Nature Scavenger Hunt
You can’t have Nature Week without doing a scavenger hunt! We found this really cute printable one from No Wooden Spoons. It was perfect because it had the pictures next to the words. Our plan was to go on a nature hike through a trail in our neighborhood. Since Gavin was still feeling tired, we decided to do it in the backyard this time. That ended up being great and they were able to do most of it on their own.
String Art Twig Ornament Craft
While they were doing the scavenger hunt, I was able to pick up twigs for our next project. I had pinned these String Art Twig Ornaments a while back. Originally I had thought they would be so cute hanging in a tee pee built out of branches or bamboo.
I didn’t get around to making the tee pee so we just made these as an art project. It is pretty simple. You just make triangles with the twigs and tie the ends together with twine. Then cut pieces of string (we used rainbow yarn) for the kids to wrap around and through the triangles. This is great for fine motor skills so I was happy to try it with my preschooler.
We wrapped up Nature Week with that project since we were heading out for a quick trip to Jekyll Island over the weekend. We definitely saw a lot of nature there and continued talking about birds, trees, and bugs. Be sure to join us starting tomorrow for Space Week!
