Spring has arrived and we are enjoying everything about it! We love switching out our books in our reading nook by the season. We are so excited to add this wonderful story A Little Chicken by Tammi Sauer to our collection. We have been reading it this past week and even did a little craft to go along with it.

This is such a sweet story about a chicken named Dot who is “a little chicken” and is scared of everything. Poor Dot realizes she must reach inside and find some courage when she needs to help her sibling, who is still in the egg, find its way back home. Dot realizes that even though she is scared sometimes, she can also be a big hero to her brothers and sisters. It is such a great story for young kids to encourage bravery.
The little chicken and hatchlings are so adorable in this book! It inspired us to try a little craft last week. Nothing says spring like a chick craft. I had wanted to use paint but realized I was out of bright yellow. That was okay because it gave me a reason to break out the Kwik Stix Paint Sticks again.
We decided to do a hand chicken. I had seen some really cute handprint chickens on Pinterest but she was not into doing that. This was way less messy anyway and she was able to color in the chicken herself after I traced her hand with the paint stick.
Then we added some yellow dots with the paint sticks for the little chicks. She just used an orange marker to draw in the beaks and a black marker for the eyes and feet. She was so proud of her artwork!
This was such an easy craft but provided a fun activity for us! We look forward to reading A Little Chicken again and again this spring. What fun books are you reading right now?
