Book Activity Craft based on Have You Filled A Bucket Today

We are wrapping up our DIY Summer Camp with Kindness Week. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to incorporate books and activities that encourage kindness. We really enjoyed the books this week so I wanted to center a craft around one of our favorites. This Have You Filled a Bucket Today? Book Activity Craft is a fun and simple way to encourage kindness.

For this craft we used Blue Sparkly Cloud Dough. Cloud Dough is super easy to make and only requires two simple ingredients! Once we had the Cloud Dough prepared, I set up a play tray with scoops, dough cutters, beads, gems, sequins, and pom poms. You could use any crafting materials that you have on hand. I was trying to go for stars, hearts, and bright colors.

I read the story, Have You Filled a Bucket Today?, while they played with the items I had set up. The book is a really sweet story about how we all have an invisible bucket that gets filled with love and kindness. I think it is a book for all ages that reminds us that showing kindness not only makes others happy but ourselves as well.

I did not give them any direction on what to make from the play tray. When they came up with these sweet kindness hearts, I was pretty excited.

After I read the story, we took turns talking about ways to fill up each other’s buckets. I had set out two little buckets for our activity as well. We used these to fill each other’s buckets with some of the craft materials after we talked about kind ways to fill their invisible buckets as well.

Here were some of their sweet responses:

  • Help each other clean their rooms.
  • Give hugs and tell them to have a good day before going to school.
  • Let the other one play with their toys.
  • Read books together.
  • Help pick up the playroom together.
  • Ask each other to play outside.

I thought they came up with great responses. I also realized how great this activity is for siblings. We have had our fair share of fighting this summer so it was nice to see some kindness between them.
