Create a Reading Journal with Kids

Do your kids love to read? Do they enjoy seeing what books they have already read? Are you looking ways to engage them more into reading? These are all the reasons I decided to create a reading journal with one of my kids.

My daughter is 11 years old now. She has an off and on relationship with reading. I try to nurture her love for reading when she is into it and try to be patient that it will return when she is not. Right before Christmas she had been in a reading slump. Then she got a new series as a gift and it returned! Yay!

So at the first of the year it was actually her idea to create a reading journal. I also love to read so I was very excited to join her in this project. Since we have lots of crafting supplies, it was fun to pull out all the stickers, pens, and washi tape we could use. If this seems like too much or you don’t have time, you can also purchase reading journals that would also be fun to use!

Creating a reading journal

We did watch a couple of videos to get inspiration on setting up our reading journals. One of our favorites was a journal set up video from the account katie is reading.

What supplies do we need to create a reading journal?

Here is a list of supplies we used for creating the reading journals. As I mentioned before I already had all of the supplies we used. I am sure there are a lot of other materials or supplies you could use as well.

  • Dot Grid Spiral Notebook
  • Alphabet Stickers
  • Washi Tape
  • Assortment of Pens and Markers

What pages should we have in the reading journal?

The first page of your reading journal should be a title page. This can include the time frame for the journal. This is where you can also put your reading goal.

After that you can include one or two pages for each month. I like to do two pages so I can also write a small review. My daughter does a single page and cuts our pictures we take of the books to put on her monthly pages.

Another page to include is a TBR (to-be-read) page. This is a list of all the books you would like to read. I have a few different TBRs. So I had one for my book club, a summer list, and a holiday list. I could also make a library TBR for all the books I would like to check out from the library.

30 Book Tracker Page for Reading Journal

She also made this 30 Book Tracker Page so she could visualize reaching her book goal for the year. Another page she made was a series tracker. The Hunger Games series is the gift she received for Christmas. She started with that series and realized there were a few other series she had started reading or wanted to read.

This was such a fun activity for us to do together and a great way to kick off the new year! These journals are now in process so we will try to do an update at the end of the year on how it turns out.
